After having to deal with a flooding workshop which left every part of the chassis and the bulkhead covered in rust plus far too much tat leaving no room to work the game is finally afoot!

Well, after a little spurt of buying bits for the car we're back in the game.

I picked up a new laminated windscreen for it a couple of weeks ago and it turned out to be the only one in the country. ;D
Next week should finally see delivery of a pair of Cobra Monaco Pro seats in grey, at last something to sit on. ;D

For indicators this car originally had semaphores, this just wouldn't do in modern traffic. The fronts were easy to sort but the rears have been giving me a bit of trouble. Eventually I tracked down some indicators that match the tail lights so now it was just down to fitting them.
In my never ending quest to make life difficult for myself I did it like this...

Start of with a couple of bits of tube with ends welded to them...
Image
Image

Very carefully mark the wing, theres only one shot at this as the wings are integral, and then chain drill around the edges....
Image

Cut out the middle and then carefully file until the light pod fits...
Image

Make sure it's all square and then tack into place...
Image
Image

Then repeat for the other side.... ;D

I'll fit the lights next week. 8-)

Meanwhile a variety of people have been popping in and slowly baremetalling the chassis rails ready for some paint. The bulk of it was done by my boy Steve and a good friend & ex club member, Carl, who I hadn't seen for five years. Steve arranged for him to come out to play this weekend and put him to work... :o
Image

Much cleaning, prepping and brushing later it looks much better..

Meanwhile I gave Steve his first welding lesson and it went just fine with no melted fingers!

A very proud moment...

More very soon.. ;D

This is how the lights sit now that I have some indicators that match the design of the original Magnette tail lights....

The engine and gearbox are back out of the car again and the front chassis rails have been cleaned up of all their rust, which came courtesy of the floods, and painted with red oxide. They'll be flatted back, sprayed with primer ready for a silver top coat. The bulkhead had been cleaned up and that will be painted matt black......I just forgot to take pictures this time.

This time I remembered some pic's for you.

A bit of tidying up at the rear and the light units are all nice and neat with a little bit of filling and smoothing, definitely looking factory now...
Image

The inside has been fibreglassed for some extra weather protection and then undersealed...
Image

Back to the front, chassis rails cleaned up and red oxided. One more coat of oxide and then it can be flatted for priming.
The rest of the bulkhead panels are in the process of being made...

Back on it on Friday afternoon which was spent making & fitting one bulkhead panel...not a productive day as most of it was spent getting my 15 year old mig to play ball, this was ultimately deemed terminal. Image

Then along came Saturday.
Time to take the back axle out so that all of the underneath stuff can be cleaned and painted...I can also sort the axle a lot easier when it's out.
It's actually simpler to just lift the car off of the axle so, after disconnecting the coilovers and the four bar links.....

Jack-up kit anybody? ;D

Then it rolled free...

Up on the workmate ready for me to attack it next week...
It really is very narrow, measured from drum face to drum face it is a huge 40" wide.
Image

Meanwhile, lots of cleaning and painting was going on. Perry (a friend of mine with an MGB that runs low 10 sec 1/4 miles)) popped in and got stuck in but, as usual, he has his own unique way of doing things.....he decided that the comfortable approach on a garden chair was the way forward. 8-)
Image

A bit of straightening and a couple of small holes to weld up but looking good...
Image

Meanwhile Carl (howdy mate!) was coming up from south London to help out for the day again. Unfortunately his mode of transport was a Mini and he arrived on the back of an AA van Image....time to get a proper car I think. So, a little shopping for bits and all was well again, running better than ever. He was a massive help this weekend and I shan't cause embarressment by saying what he did as he looks in on the forum but suffice to say I shall never forget....

Ha ha, a right pair of comedians you two are......not!

My good lady has already commented on the width of the seats....which are surprisingly comfy......and my 'proportions' and then my son popped in and commented that they would look really good in his Vauxhall Carlton.

Toerags the lot of you.
