The fleet

Postby Gulf blue 62 » Sun Feb 14, 2010 11:12 pm

Hello all, having looked through this section i thought i would pop a post in. Most if not all of you have seen the beetle but here goes anyhow.

First up is Eliot. A 1962 Golde Rag Top Finished in Gulf Blue with US spec bumper.

We bought this little motor 03/10/2008. It was our first Air cooled Vw and we haven't looked back since.
Since owning it i have completed a few jobs myself, renewing seals trim clips and little bits and bobs.

History:
Eliot was first registered on the 10/10/1962 and we are the 6th keeper although the 4th was the father of the 5th and and it was only because it was bought before the 5th had a license.
It is a 1192cc and has the original engine and i believe gearbox.
I have receipts going back to the 2nd owner and a restoration portfolio. This was completed by the 3rd owner, who when he sold the car advertised in Volksworld magazine and the car was awarded car of the month, this was in the July 2006 issue.

Spec:
Engine 1192cc
Golde Rag Top Factory spec
Volmatic seats Factor Spec
Cream and grey interior Factory spec and original
Auxiliary heater plumbed in to the drivers side heater channel with 2 speed control on dash. Handy in the cold weather.
Us spec bumper
6V system
Spax dampers but at standard height, allowing for a little age related sagging

This is our daily car and last year covered about 10K it did break down but only twice. 1st was the coil after Stanford hall. And second was the Window wiper motor.

Future Plans:
In an ideal world i will restore this car in 2 years time to high standard using as many original parts as possible. It will then be back to our daily car.

Next up is our most recent addition, Phillis. Phillis is a 1972 Devon caper bought from Malcolm Hawkins.
Again i cant take any large amount of credit for the restoration as Malc completed the majority, panels, paint.
I with the help of Malc have completed a temporary rebuild of the pop top, this will be rebuilt properly over the winter of 2011 so any volunteers ? ha ha

I dont know loads about this van but intend to have a beer fueled night with Malc and pick his brains about it so watch this space for up dates
I have so far with the help of my father sorted out some of the wiring gremlins that she had and with Dr Batts help the rear brakes.

I have rebuilt the speedo pod and am currently fettling the door gaps (man thats a poop job in this weather)
Fingers crossed the M.O.T will be completed in the next few weeks and i can sort the temporary interior again this will be replaced in early 2011.
The plan for this year is just go to shows and on holiday in her and generally enjoy

Spec:
1972 devon camper
Dr Batts 1641 motor with single webber progressive carb
Green and white
Standard height
Standard wheels etc

Well thought i would update this thread pics will follow soon.

I have spent the last couple of weekends grinding down the front wheel arch area and chassis legs, Dr Batt waved his welding torch around a few areas that had pin holes in them and i have now gave them a fresh coat of red oxide.

The next step is to cover a few more pin holes that i found on the passenger side this evening and red oxide those. After this i will start the main floor area, chassis rails and sills.

Ill be honest it is the worst job i think i have ever done and its hard to maintain a good standard of workmanship as its so demoralizing. :(

Cheers

So here are the pics i have been promising, as i said in the last post this is a realy poo job to have to do but as we all known the tin worm gets in are beloved vehicles quicker than an STD in a hookers nickers

So i have spent about 7-8 days under then van grinding krusting and painting, i think i have about another 3-4 days left until its all sorted.

As you can see from the pics there is not much welding that needs doing just a small patch in the N/S arch and then a few bits on the underside.
The one and only Dr Batt will be doing these as he has kindley alowed me to talk him in to it
Sorry that they are not really step by step, but you get the idea of the task ahead of me.
I have now completed about 3/4 of the van, then i get to do the bit i have been looking forward to the most, start building/fitting the interior.

Cheers

Hello all, sorry that i have not updated this for so long, i have been really busy on and off the van.
Well i have almost finished weather proofing the underside, i wanted to originally paint it white using Hammarite smooth but after 2 cans it wasn't really giving any coverage and at the best part of £10 a can i wasn't willing to continue so i changed the plan and bought some Hammarite black smooth.
As you will see there is still some white parts left over and some still in Red oxide.

So having spent the best part of month on my back under the van i have decided to have a break and move on to nicer things.
Dr Batt waved his welding torch round a few bits in the floor whilst i was work this week, so today i cracked on with phase 1 of the sound proofing

Now for the sound deadening i have opted for a multi layer process, i chose this after loads and loads of research.
So first to go on is a layer Flashing tape. I bought this from Screw fix it cost about £80 for 6 rolls which are 225mm x 10m so about £14 each. It is really quite nice to work with, i have applied it using a small amount of heat which makes its nice and pliable.
As you will see from the photos i have only done above the engine, as i had painted the living area with red oxide.
